You’ve probably been told that there are a number of steps you’ll need to take if you’re interested in keeping your teeth healthy and strong. Similarly, you may know that there are several things you’ll need to avoid doing. Still, would you be surprised to hear that some of your favorite drinks could actually cause problems?

For instance, did you know that drinking alcohol can affect your pearly whites? In reality, alcohol can irritate your gums. This irritation can ultimately lead to problems like gum disease, which can also lead to serious health issues. Sadly, if your gums aren’t healthy, they can support your teeth properly—which means your teeth could eventually fall out.

Other drinks, such as coffee and tea, can also cause problems. For example, did you know that coffee, tea, and dark soda can all stain your teeth? If you need your daily cup of coffee, you could try adding milk, which will help you avoid staining your teeth. Similarly, if you choose to drink tea but are worried about the color of your teeth, we recommend drinking a lighter tea.

Wine can also stain your teeth. Generally, we recommend choosing white wine instead of red wine because it’s less likely to stain your teeth. Still, please remember that red wine can actually reduce inflammation that can cause gum disease.

Naturally, you don’t have to stop drinking your favorite drinks altogether.
